  • Naturally, I'm not keen on roaming data charges but I'm not sure if I can survive NYC public transport without an app! I can only think of renting a mobile wifi or making do with free public wifi where available. Not sure why it is less of the case here in NYC.Ģ) How can a tourist navigate the subway / bus system without an app? My smartphone is a company issued device that is locked to a carrier. But most of the time, the trip planning app will give the station closest to the destination. I'm somewhat familiar with large stations in other cities like Tokyo so I do understand that sometimes, transferring from one platform to another will entail just as much walking (if not more so as above ground).

    There is an option to "minimize walking" available in MTA Trip Planner, but it sent me on an even longer roundabout route. I understand this might be due to the original train line I boarded, but I thought there would be transfer option so one can switch to the line/ station closest to destination. R/W train Rector St Station), entailing more walking time.
